Katia Tannous ~ Current Focus of Research

Prof. Katia Tannous explaining the theory of mixing biomass and inert particles in a cold 	fluidized bed. Fluidized Bed Technology Her primary research interests are fluidized beds and related multi-phase systems. Fluidized beds are used for a wide variety of chemical and physical purposes, for example in catalytic, gas-solid phase reactors, drying, coating and thermal treatment. Working closely with undergraduate and graduate students, fellow faculty members, and other research associates, Dr. Tannous has studied a wide range of problems which are fundamental in nature but which have practical applications. Some of the topics studied include particle size distribution, characterization properties, hydrodynamics, and mixing on low and high- velocity beds; entrainment; heat transfer; and reactor modeling.

 Applications studied include fluidized bed combustion and gasification of various fuels (e.g. biomass). Considering biomass, some others general applied studies are being done as: storage, transport and biomass management. The Laboratory of Particle Technology and Multi-Phase Processes/LaProM have facilities for the study of fluidization. For example, the group operates a pilot-scale bubbling and circulating fluidized bed unit in which both fundamental and applied data have been and are currently being obtained. There is also a wide variety of related equipment for characterizing the particles and obtaining in-bed measurements.
